Well, let's look at what I have done so far in the first few weekdays of my holidays..Monday Went to school to work on our eco-hut, a structure we were supposed to construct in the biology competition on the 29th and 30th. It was rather unstable, so we demolished it and rebuild it. Half-way through my poking a hole into a bottle cap process, I cut my fourth finger. There were literally drops of blood. I felt faint and dizzy cos I couldn't look at blood. Then Mr Peh put a plaster on my wound (I felt like such a lady) and we continued. I managed to cut my third finger on the other hand (no blood, just skin got scraped) and tore off the scab on my thumb. Fyi, scab is the brown thing that forms on a wound while it recovers inside. Our hut managed to stand in the end! Whee! *feels a sense of accomplishment Tuesday Woke up at 6.45a.m. and started walking to school at 7.10a.m. Carried materials we would be using with the other similarly heavy-eyed zombies to the foyer to await the arrival of our bus. Reached the Science Centre at around 8.30a.m. and wished the day could be over quickly. Carried materials to the registration area. Registered and picked lot number (area where our hut would be at). It turned out to be at 3B. Grassy area with dangerous potholes up to 30cm deep. Filled with disgusting toads and cockcroaches. And big black ants. I started with building the roof first. I felt incredibly bored and going insane with going round and round with the twine but still, I had to. It was to create tension so that our plastic sheet for water-proofing could be woven through the strings and also to be able to withstand the leaves we were gonna place ontop of it later. There were half cut bottles with their tops and bottoms cut off on the other half of the roof, or maybe should I say one quarter of the roof. Our juniors were having problems with their hut, so Mr Peh went over to help. Thus making us the "Independent Abandoned". Haha. So we said. There were extra challenges to help us gain additional points throughtout the hut-making "journey". One of them was to make recycled paper. Which left Sharan and I with the roof. We had lunch of rice and chicken and a small round piece of fish with mayo and mixed peas at around 12.30p.m. We finished the hut very quickly. But...it started to rain (after we finished the hut, phew) and our recycled paper got soaked!! The first day was exhausting.. Wednesday The only transport which we did not have to pay for was the first trip to Science Centre on Tues. We returned on train last evening, and came on train in the morning. Everyone was bleary-eyed and sleepy. I sort of wish for the whole thing to be over, but also wished it was not. Anyway, the estate managers talked about roofs of huts collapsing yesterday and we wished fervently that our hut would not meet with the same fate. Our hut still stood proud and strong and even collected water! (As was intended with our water-collecting device) The only challenge that day was to filter some drain water. We were told to hunt for recyclable plastics with numbers 1 to 7 last night. We earned all the points that we could for both of these challenges. We finished demolishing the hut fast enough and slacked. There was more junk thrown away then what was the intended purpose (the 3Rs). We played games thereafter. Moved into the comfort of the air-conditioning in the Science Centre. Went soveniur-shopping. Lunch today was buffet of fried rice, cabbage, orange fish, and chicken with eclairs. Eclairs were a hit. We then proceeded to the auditorium for prize-giving. There was the usual certificate presentation, followed by the actual prize-giving. There were 10 consolation prizes and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. We didn't get any of the consolation prizes. There was a moment of tension and apprehension when they were gonna announce the last 3 prizes. I was thinking, "I hope we could get something!!!!" My heart was gonna burst with the suspense! And then they announced, "ATP from Tanjong Katong Girls' School!" And we were like "AHHHHHHHHH!!!! AHHHHHH!!!" The usual TKGS scream. You know. HAHA. I was so happy! But the prize money and trophy still went to the school anyway. But it was great that we won something so what we did was recognised. The juniors didn't win a prize, but it was good, all for experience. So Mr Peh said. We took a group photo outside after that. In conclusion, these two days were wet and dirty, but enjoyable, experiencial, interesting and great. =] (painful for my fingers and cut palm, heh;)) Thursday A break.=] That's all=] We won $200 for the school..which I think will go to either the TKGS re-building fund or the TKGS needy fund. Oh yeah, we got 3rd, not 1st, not 2nd..but anyway, I think we were good=] *meet an ex-konghwaian there, but didn't acknowledge him..kinda regret it now. should hv asked for his email to keep in touch..nvm.. byew! |
